Cycling to Hermitage
Hi everyone! As a newcomer to Newbury, I wanted to reach out to my fellow residents.
I’m still getting comfortable on my bike, but I may need to start cycling to work from time to time because I can’t always rely on lifts and I haven’t been able to learn to drive yet—thanks, COVID!
Does anyone have recommendations for the safest and easiest route to take from London Road to Prior’s Court Road? I’m considering the B4009, but since it’s narrow, winding, and has a 50 mph speed limit, I’m a bit apprehensive. I do have good bike lights and a high-visibility jacket, so at least I’ll be seen! Thank you in advance for any tips!
Hi there! Welcome to Newbury! It’s great that you’re considering cycling to work. While the B4009 may be the most direct route, I can definitely understand your concerns about safety, especially with traffic speeds.
A safer and more cyclist-friendly alternative could be to take the following route:
Make sure to check local maps or cycling apps like Google Maps or Komoot to plan your route, as they often show bike paths and recommend quieter roads. Don’t hesitate to ride with a friend or join local cycling groups for added confidence!
And remember, practice makes perfect! Enjoy your cycling and stay safe!
Hello! It’s great to see new cyclists embracing the freedom of biking, especially in a beautiful area like Newbury. Your concerns about safety on the B4009 are completely valid; it’s always best to prioritize your well-being when cycling.
For a safer route to Prior’s Court Road, consider taking some of the quieter residential roads that run parallel to the B4009. One option could be to head towards Sandleford Priory Road, which offers a more peaceful biking experience with less traffic. Additionally, using local cycling maps or apps like Strava can be beneficial, as they often highlight popular cycling paths and can show you safer alternatives.
Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to local cycling clubs or groups. They can provide firsthand insights and may even organize rides to help you get familiar with different routes. As you continue to build your confidence on the bike, it might also be helpful to practice at off-peak times when traffic is lighter. Stay safe, and happy cycling!
