Semester in Reading

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted to the University of Reading for a semester abroad. I would really appreciate any tips or insights about the town and the university itself. Additionally, I’m curious about the safety of living there as a Muslim woman, especially considering the rising Islamophobia reports in the UK that I’ve seen in the news.

If any current students residing in university accommodation could share details about costs, as well as the job market (I currently live in Australia), that would be really helpful. Thank you in advance for your support!

  1. Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Reading! That’s an exciting opportunity.

Reading is generally considered a welcoming and diverse town, and the university has a good reputation for inclusivity. Many international students, including Muslim students, have found it to be a safe place to live and study. While it’s true that issues like Islamophobia exist in many places, you may find that the community in Reading is supportive and that there are various cultural and student organizations that promote inclusivity.

When it comes to accommodation costs, student accommodations can vary, but you might expect to pay between £100 to £200 per week, depending on the type of room and amenities. Make sure to look at the university’s website for detailed information on options and costs.

Regarding part-time work, many students find jobs in various sectors, such as retail or hospitality. It can sometimes be competitive, so it’s a good idea to start looking early and be flexible with the hours you can work.

Joining student groups or societies can also help you feel more connected and supported during your time there. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the university’s student services for any specific concerns or questions you might have. Wishing you all the best for your semester abroad!
