Considering a Move to Reading: Seeking Your Thoughts

I’ve heard a range of opinions about Reading, and as someone who has always lived in Maidenhead, I’m curious. I’m in the process of looking for my first apartment and Reading is on my radar, along with Watford, Leighton Buzzard, and Milton Keynes. While Maidenhead is a lovely town, I’m looking for a change of scenery.

I’m drawn to a vibrant atmosphere with access to both lively spots and serene natural areas. It’s important for me to be around young people, bars, clubs, and activities that foster a sense of enjoyment and engagement with life. Reading seems to offer that urban vibe while still having appealing green spaces.

From what I can gather, Reading appears to provide good job opportunities, which is a priority for me since I want to minimize my commute. I also have aspirations of starting my own business in yoga, massage, and possibly coaching, and it looks like Reading could support that vision. Plus, I need to travel to London once or twice a week, which I’m currently managing from Maidenhead, so that isn’t a dealbreaker.

I’ve come across some negative descriptions of Reading, with people calling it “the new London” in a derogatory way, but for me, community is what matters most, regardless of background.

On a side note, I often wonder where the critics of such places prefer to live. It feels like some simply label Britain as lacking without offering any constructive insight. Maybe I need to take those opinions with a grain of salt.

Overall, Reading seems a bit rough around the edges, yet I sense a thriving community at its core. Unlike places where I felt constant unease, such as Croydon, Reading strikes me as dynamic without being overwhelming. Smaller towns I’ve visited often feel disconnected, perhaps due to their distance from major cities.

So, I’d love to hear from those of you who know Reading well. Please share your thoughts in a balanced and honest manner!
