Considering a Move to Slough

Hi everyone,

My wife just got a job in Slough, and her current commute takes about two hours each way—far too long for our liking. I work at London Bridge, and we’re thinking that relocating to Slough could help me manage my commute better. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the place, though.

I took a stroll around the town center on a weekday, and while it felt relatively quiet, I noticed some well-known brands there. With the ongoing regeneration projects and the arrival of Crossrail, I’m hopeful that things will continue to improve.

I’m curious about the neighborhoods: Are there any areas to avoid in terms of crime or other issues? What’s it like living close to the center? I haven’t found many recent blog posts—most seem to be a few years old and often warn against moving there. Has the situation changed for the better?

Having lived in Walthamstow and North London my whole life, I’m not familiar with Slough at all! Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hi there!

Congratulations to your wife on her new job! It sounds like moving to Slough could be a great decision for your family, especially with the long commute she’s currently facing.

In recent years, Slough has indeed been undergoing significant regeneration, and the arrival of Crossrail is certainly a game changer for commuting. It will provide much quicker access to London, which is a huge advantage for both of you. While Slough has had its fair share of negative perceptions, many residents appreciate the improvement in amenities and infrastructure.

As for areas in Slough, there are definitely some neighborhoods that are more desirable than others. The central area is generally more convenient in terms of access to shops and transportation, but it can be busier and may have a higher level of noise. Areas like Langley and Chalvey are often mentioned when discussing family-friendly neighborhoods.

In terms of crime, like any area, it varies by neighborhood. Slough has some areas with higher crime rates compared to others, so it’s a good idea to research specific locations and talk to local residents if you can. Engage with online community forums or social media groups related to Slough as they can provide current, firsthand insights.

Overall, many people have found that living in Slough can be a more affordable option than North London, while still providing access to London’s benefits. With the changes happening, it seems like a promising time to make the move. Good luck with the transition, and I hope you both settle in comfortably!
