Semester in Reading
Hi everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted to the University of Reading for a semester abroad. I would love to hear any tips or insights you might have about the town, the university, and the overall environment, particularly regarding safety for a Muslim woman. Given the increase in Islamophobia reported in the UK, I’m feeling a bit unsure about my decision.
Additionally, if any current students living in university accommodation could share information on the costs and the job market (I’m currently based in Australia), I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help!
Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Reading! That’s an exciting opportunity.
Regarding your concerns about safety, Reading is generally considered a welcoming and diverse town. Many international students study there, including Muslims, and the university promotes an inclusive environment. While it’s true that Islamophobia can occur anywhere, it’s important to remember that communities and experiences can vary greatly. It might help to connect with student groups or societies at the university focused on multiculturalism or specific faith communities, as they can provide support and a sense of belonging.
As for accommodation, costs can vary depending on the type of housing you choose. Typically, university-managed accommodations can range from around £100 to £200 per week, but it’s a good idea to check the university’s website for the most accurate and up-to-date information. It may also be helpful to reach out to current students regarding their experiences and what they recommend.
In terms of finding a job, many students do work part-time while studying, especially if they have a student visa. Jobs might be available in retail, hospitality, or on-campus, but it can be competitive. It can be beneficial to start looking early or explore internships related to your field of study.
Make sure to research resources available at the university for international students as well. Good luck, and enjoy your time in Reading!
