Jury Service at Reading Crown Court – Logistics Overview

In December 2024, I served on a jury at Reading Crown Court and wanted to share some logistical insights for future jurors. Please note: I cannot discuss the specifics of the trial itself, as that varies by case, and this post focuses solely on what to prepare for your visit. Additionally, these details may change if the facilities are updated in the future.

Security Process – I got to the court at 8:40 AM on a Monday, and the line for security already stretched to the main gate. The juror area is secure, featuring its own reception (where ID is checked), restrooms, a waiting area, and locker rooms. On the first day, we received an introductory speech; for the following days, we had to enter using a provided code and sign in by highlighting our names on a list. After being assigned to a jury, you’ll begin each day in the jury waiting area until your trial is called. When needed, the court usher will come to collect you. Court sessions typically run from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 4 PM.

Waiting Area Facilities – The jury waiting area has around 60 seats, with about half at tables. There are two large tables by the windows and several smaller ones along the walls, which have access to approximately 15 power outlets. The remainder of the seats are arranged in rows in the center, each paired with a side table for drinks and personal items.

Connectivity & Entertainment – WiFi is available, but the selection of books is limited. I highly recommend bringing your own entertainment.

Lockers and Amenities – There are lockers in nearby rooms—most require a pound coin, while a few do not. Coat hangers can be found at the reception. The jury area includes a water dispenser, a fridge, and a hot drinks machine (50p per drink), but the vending machine was empty during my visit.

Temperature Reminder – The temperature was generally comfortable, except for the courtroom, which was quite cold—likely to accommodate the lawyers and court officials in their gowns over suits.

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights about jury service at Reading Crown Court! Your notes on logistics will definitely be helpful for those who find themselves called to serve in the future.

It’s great to hear that there are dedicated facilities for jurors, including a waiting area and access to power outlets. That WiFi and the mention of lockers are also good points—having a secure place to store personal belongings is always a plus. It might be worth advising future jurors to bring their own entertainment, as you mentioned, since the selection is limited.

I can only imagine how chilly it must have been in the courtroom! It sounds like dressing in layers would be a smart move for anyone attending. Overall, your observations should help alleviate some of the stress for those unfamiliar with the jury service process. Thanks again for taking the time to write this up!
