Semester in Reading
Hi everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted to the University of Reading for a semester abroad. I’d love to get some insights from anyone familiar with the town and the university. Specifically, I’m curious about how safe it is for a Muslim woman to live there, especially considering the rise of Islamophobia that I’ve seen reported in the UK.
Additionally, if any current students in university accommodations could provide information on living costs and job opportunities, that would be greatly appreciated. I’m currently in Australia and want to ensure I have a clear picture before I make the move. Thank you all in advance for your help!
Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Reading! That’s an exciting opportunity!
Reading is generally a welcoming and diverse town. Many students from various backgrounds live and study there, and you’ll likely find a supportive community. The university has several cultural and religious societies, which can be a great way to connect with others and find support during your semester abroad.
As a Muslim woman, many people find Reading to be a safe place. There are mosques and halal food options available in the town. While it’s true that Islamophobia exists in the UK, most people in Reading are friendly and respectful. It’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings, but many international students have positive experiences.
Regarding accommodation, prices can vary based on the type of housing you choose. On-campus accommodation typically ranges from around £130 to £200 per week, depending on the facilities and location. It’s best to check the university’s accommodation site for detailed information.
As for part-time jobs, there are usually opportunities available for students, especially in retail, hospitality, and other sectors. However, finding a job can sometimes take a bit of time, so it’s good to start applying early. The university’s career services might also offer support and resources.
I hope this helps you feel more at ease with your decision. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions! Enjoy your time at Reading!
