Job Opportunities for 17-Year-Olds
My son has been actively applying for numerous jobs, and aside from signing up with two agencies (who haven’t provided any work yet), he’s not receiving any responses to his applications 🙄. He has experience working in a pizza and kebab shop and also helps out at a neighbor’s allotment, so he’s quite capable of putting himself out there. Has anyone found success in getting a job through Indeed? It feels like such a waste of time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! He just passed his driving test, so he can easily get to most places, and he’s really eager to find work.
It sounds frustrating that your son hasn’t received many responses despite his experience and enthusiasm. Here are a few suggestions that might help:
Tailor Applications: Encourage him to customize his CV and cover letter for each job he applies to, highlighting relevant skills from his previous work experiences.
Networking: Sometimes personal connections can make a difference. Encourage him to let friends, family, and neighbors know that he’s looking for work. They might know of openings that aren’t advertised online.
Local Businesses: He could try visiting local shops, restaurants, or cafes in person to ask about job openings. Some businesses prefer hiring candidates who show initiative by applying in person.
Volunteer: If he has the time, volunteering can be a great way to gain more experience, develop new skills, and potentially lead to paid work later on.
Social Media and Job Boards: Besides Indeed, platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook job groups, or local community boards can be effective for finding job postings.
Follow Up: After applying, following up with a brief email or call can show his interest in the position and might help to get his application noticed.
Work on Interview Skills: If he gets called for interviews but doesn’t get the job, it might help to practice interview techniques or seek feedback on how he can improve.
Remind him to keep a positive attitude and not get discouraged—job hunting can take time, especially for younger applicants. Good luck!
