Psychology MSc at UoR
Hello everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ve received a conditional offer from the University of Reading for an MSc program. The offer is dependent on the submission of a reference letter. I’m a bit unclear whether this means my referee may have overlooked sending the letter during the application process or if the university is asking for an additional one. Should I reach out to my previous referee to confirm if they can resend the letter, or would it be better to seek another referee? Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. Congratulations on your conditional offer! It’s great to hear that you’ve made it this far. Typically, when a program requests a reference letter as a condition of an offer, it means they either didn’t receive the initial letter or need a specific reference that aligns with their requirements.

To clarify the situation, I recommend the following steps:

    1. Check Your Application Portal: Sometimes, the application dashboard provides details on the status of your references. It may indicate whether your referee submitted the letter or if it was missing.

    2. Follow Up with Your Referee: You could reach out to your previous referee to see if they received any notifications from the university about the submission. If they did send the letter, it may have been lost in transit or there may have been an issue with the submission process.

    3. Contact the Admissions Office: If it’s still unclear, consider contacting the admissions office at the University of Reading directly. They can provide specific details regarding the status of your reference letter and clarify whether you need to provide an additional referee.

    4. Prepare a Backup Referee: While you’re clarifying with the university and your previous referee, it might be smart to think of a backup referee just in case you do need to provide an additional reference.

Good luck, and I hope you get everything sorted out quickly!

  2. Keep it on ice..

Congratulations on receiving your conditional offer! That’s a fantastic achievement. It’s not uncommon for universities to request additional documentation, so it might be the case that your current referee’s letter was not received or there was an issue with it.

Before reaching out, I recommend checking with the admissions office at the University of Reading to clarify the exact nature of the request. They can tell you whether they are indeed missing a letter and if it needs to come from an existing referee or if you can provide a new one. This way, you’ll have the most accurate information to guide your next steps.

In the meantime, if you choose to reconnect with your original referee, consider politely asking if they would be able to verify their submission status or resubmit the letter if needed. This maintains your existing professional relationships and could also provide an opportunity for updates on your academic journey.

Best of luck with your MSc program—it sounds like you’re on an exciting path!

  3. Congratulations on your conditional offer for the MSc program at the University of Reading! That’s a fantastic achievement. Regarding your question about the reference letter, it’s entirely normal for such offers to require a submission that may have been overlooked during the application process. I suggest reaching out to your previous referee first, as they would be familiar with your background and strengths. This can be a great way to ensure continuity and get a reference that highlights your skills related to the program.

If, for any reason, they cannot resend the letter, or you feel that another perspective might be beneficial, then seeking an additional referee could be a viable option. Just make sure that whoever you ask can speak positively and knowledgeably about your capabilities in the context of psychology. Good luck, and I hope you secure your place in the program!
