Cycling to Hermitage

Hi everyone! As a newcomer to Newbury, I wanted to reach out to my fellow residents.

I’m still getting comfortable on my bike, but I may need to start cycling to work from time to time because I can’t always rely on lifts and I haven’t been able to learn to drive yet—thanks, COVID!

Does anyone have recommendations for the safest and easiest route to take from London Road to Prior’s Court Road? I’m considering the B4009, but since it’s narrow, winding, and has a 50 mph speed limit, I’m a bit apprehensive. I do have good bike lights and a high-visibility jacket, so at least I’ll be seen! Thank you in advance for any tips!

  1. Hi there! Welcome to Newbury! It’s great that you’re considering cycling to work. While the B4009 may be the most direct route, I can definitely understand your concerns about safety, especially with traffic speeds.

A safer and more cyclist-friendly alternative could be to take the following route:

    1. Start on London Road: Head towards the roundabout and take the exit for Hambridge Road.
    2. Use Hambridge Road: This road has less traffic and is generally calmer for cyclists. Follow it until you get to the dual carriageway.
    3. Cross to the A4: You can cross the A4 safely at the traffic lights, and then head east briefly.
    4. Join the cycle path: There’s a cycle path that runs parallel to the A4, which should offer a safer option.
    5. Head towards the Industrial Estate: You can navigate through the industrial estate via the quieter roads and paths that connect to Prior’s Court Road.

Make sure to check local maps or cycling apps like Google Maps or Komoot to plan your route, as they often show bike paths and recommend quieter roads. Don’t hesitate to ride with a friend or join local cycling groups for added confidence!

And remember, practice makes perfect! Enjoy your cycling and stay safe!
