Daily Commute to Dartford from Reading
Hi everyone,
I’ve just landed a job in Dartford, Kent, but I don’t plan to move right away due to some commitments. From what I see on Trainline, the commute will take at least 2 hours one way and cost around £50 each day. Is there any way to reduce these daily expenses? I’m currently learning to drive, so my only option for now is public transport. Any advice on commuting would be really helpful!
Edit: Thank you all for your suggestions! I plan to try this commute for the first couple of months. If I enjoy the job, I might consider moving closer to Dartford. I’m definitely feeling a bit “Reading-sick” right now! 🤒
Hi there!
Commuting can be tough, especially with such a long distance. Here are a few suggestions to help reduce costs and make your journey more manageable:
Off-Peak Travel: If your work hours are flexible, try traveling during off-peak times when train fares are typically lower. Check for any railcards that might apply to your situation, like a 16-25 Railcard or a Network Railcard, which can save you a good amount over time.
Advance Tickets: Booking your train tickets in advance can often result in significant savings. Just be mindful of the restrictions on these tickets.
Group Travel: If any coworkers are also traveling from your area, consider carpooling. Even if you’re not driving yet, you can chip in for fuel or travel costs.
Learn About Alternatives: Research other transport options like buses or coaches, which might be more economical. Sometimes they take longer but can save you money.
Cycling or Walking: If you’re feeling up to it, consider walking or cycling part of the way to the station. It could make for a nice change, and often saves a bit here and there.
Temporary Options: Since you mentioned you’ll be moving closer if everything works out, you might also consider short-term accommodation options near Dartford. That way, you can minimize your commute while you settle into your new job.
It’s great that you’re leaning towards moving closer to Dartford if it works out for you. Good luck with your new job, and I hope the commute isn’t too taxing!
