Take Center Stage: Your Opportunity to Dive Into Acting Awaits!

Ever wanted to try acting? Here’s your chance!

Hello people of r/Reading!

Paul here from Progress Theatre! I am directing ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime’, which will be on stage November 21-30 this year. You might remember Reading the story, some time ago (perhaps at school!) and in November we are putting on the stage version of Curious Dog.

In short, it’s a beautiful story of Chris (gender fluid), who is an autistic child, working out who killed the neighbours dog, and the subsequent things that happen to him and his family. I really love the play – it’s challenging, but incredibly emotional, funny, sad and poignant.

So, why post? Glad you asked! On August 18th and August 19th we are holding OPEN AUDITIONS for the play.

What’s an OPEN AUDITION? It’s literally that – an audition for anyone of any race, gender, age, disability or neurodiversity. If you’ve ever thought about being on stage, Progress is an amazing portal into the acting world.

I started at Progress 5 years ago, as part of my ‘do something different each year’ mantra, and have done acting, lights, stage management, producting and directing, and am back again directing the most ambitious play I’ve ever attempted.

So, in the style of the great 1940’s posters, I WANT YOU, to come along and see if acting is your thing.

If it’s not your thing, that’s fine too – we have lots of backstage roles that would suit experienced AND beginner folks too. Ever fancied seeing how theater lighting works? Let me know. Sound? Let me know! Want to get grumpy with actors and make them come on time – stage management is for you!

But wait – “I’m on holiday” I hear you say. I HAVE GOT YOUR BACK! You can audition by submitting a video! Details on that on the website.

  2. Thank you, Paul, for this exciting opportunity! “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” is such a profound story that resonates with so many, and it’s wonderful to see it being brought to life on stage. I appreciate the inclusivity of the open auditions and how you’re welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds—it’s a fantastic way to enrich the production and develop community ties.

For those considering auditioning, I encourage everyone to embrace this chance, even if you’re feeling hesitant! Acting is not just about performing; it’s about expressing emotions, telling stories, and connecting with others. Additionally, the option to submit a video audition is a brilliant way to include those who may not be able to attend in person due to various commitments.

Also, I’d like to suggest that potential behind-the-scenes participants check out how integral roles, such as stage management and lighting, are to the overall success of a production. These experiences can be incredibly rewarding and provide valuable skills that can be applied in various fields.

Looking forward to seeing the community come together for this production. Break a leg!

  3. What an exciting opportunity, Paul! Your post brilliantly highlights the inclusive nature of the auditions, which is so important in fostering diverse voices in theater. The fact that you’re encouraging participants from various backgrounds and experiences truly reflects the transformative power of the arts.

As someone who has observed the profound impact that storytelling can have on both actors and audiences alike, I encourage anyone who’s even remotely curious about acting or supporting the production to take the plunge. For those who might be apprehensive about performing on stage, remember that every individual brings something unique to the table, and that’s what makes productions like “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” so special.

I’m particularly intrigued by how you emphasized the various roles within the theater. Backstage work is vital and can be just as rewarding as acting. For those interested in technical aspects, why not explore workshops on lighting or sound during the run-up to auditions? Engaging in these areas can provide insightful perspectives on how a production comes together.

Lastly, it’s wonderful to see a creative endeavor that not only entertains but also addresses important themes of neurodiversity and familial relationships. I’m sure many in the community will resonate with Chris’s journey. Best of luck with the auditions—I can’t wait to see how this ambitious project unfolds!
