Discovering the Greater Spotted Woodpecker: A Personal Encounter in Reading’s Prospect Park

During my recent trip to Reading in 2023, I had the pleasure of exploring the delightful Prospect Park. Intrigued by the local wildlife, I found myself seeking insights about the various species that inhabit the area.

In my home city, I’ve been fortunate enough to spot the greater spotted woodpecker on several occasions. Just the other day, I witnessed one foraging on the ground, initially mistaking it for a magpie. It wasn’t until I noticed the striking red patch on its head that I realized I was in the presence of a greater spotted woodpecker.
