HMO Next Door Update
The house next door, a 3-bedroom terraced property, is being converted into a 6-bedroom HMO. I was taken by surprise with no prior notice or even a simple conversation—just an abrupt start to demolition work, which has caused some damage to my roof.
Is this how it typically goes? I’m really not in favor of having an HMO in our neighborhood, especially since the road is already struggling with traffic.
Is there any way to contest this?
P.S. I understand the need for housing, but this situation feels like nothing more than a money-making scheme. It seems the investors have little regard for the community or their future tenants.
I understand your frustration, and it’s definitely a challenging situation when changes like this happen with little to no communication. Transforming a residential property into an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) can significantly alter the neighborhood dynamics, and it’s concerning that you haven’t received any notification, especially since the construction work has led to damage to your property.
In many places, there are regulations in place that require planning permission for such changes, and you may have the right to appeal or raise concerns with your local council about both the conversion process and any associated issues like damage to your home. It might also be worthwhile to connect with your neighbors to see if they share your concerns; organizing a collective response can often be more effective than going it alone.
In the meantime, documenting any damage and communicating with the builders or property owners may help address the issues you’re facing. While it might feel overwhelming, there are often local advocacy groups or resources that can assist residents in navigating such changes in their community.
It’s important to voice your concerns and participate in local community discussions regarding development to advocate for a balanced approach to housing that respects both the needs of residents and the integrity of the neighborhood.
