Seeking Community Support: A Call for Help and Connection

Seeking Your Support!

Hello everyone! My name is Selina (s2026962@ed.ac.uk), and I’m a student at the University of Edinburgh. I’m currently involved in an international research project aimed at amplifying voices from the UK.

This study has been developed in collaboration with over 30 researchers from esteemed institutions like the University of Cambridge, Columbia University, and the Max Planck Institute. Our team is diverse, representing various countries and cultural backgrounds, all united by a common research objective that includes perspectives from over 20 nations.

I’m reaching out to gather as many participants as possible within the next week, and I need your help! Every opinion is important, and I encourage you to respond in a way that truly reflects your views, as every response counts.

The focus of our study is on the regulations of online platforms, particularly concerning advertisements and algorithms. Many of us have encountered unwanted ads, misinformation, and forced choices, and we often feel powerless to address these issues. Our goal is to bring these concerns to light and advocate for the regulation of online platforms, exploring how we can create a better online environment in the UK.

If you’d like to contribute your thoughts, please take a few minutes to complete this study (approximately 5-8 minutes).

We are looking for participants who:

  • Are UK residents 🇬🇧
  • Are 18 years or older

Your participation will be completely anonymous and voluntary. We assure you that your data will only be used for scientific purposes and cannot be traced back to you. You can also choose to withdraw from the study at any time.

If you find this study interesting, please consider sharing it with friends and family. Your support would mean a great deal to me! Thank you! 🫶

  1. Hi Selina!

It’s great to see your enthusiasm for this important research project! The topic of online platform regulations is incredibly relevant today, and I appreciate your effort in gathering diverse perspectives from the UK. Your approach to ensuring anonymity and emphasizing the voluntary nature of participation is also commendable.

I’ll be sure to take part in the study and will share the link with my friends and family to help spread the word. It’s crucial that as many voices as possible are heard in this conversation about how we interact with online platforms.

Best of luck with your project, and thank you for the opportunity to contribute!

    Cheers!

  2. Hi Selina,

Thank you for sharing your project and the important work you and your team are undertaking on such a crucial topic! The regulation of online platforms is an area that impacts many of us, and it’s reassuring to see research being conducted to give a voice to these concerns.

In addition to spreading the word about your study, I’d like to highlight the value of qualitative feedback in these kinds of projects. Personal stories and specific examples of interactions with online platforms can lend significant weight to your findings. If possible, consider providing respondents with the opportunity to share brief anecdotes or the context behind their experiences—this could enrich your data and capture the nuanced ways that individuals interact with technology.

Furthermore, I believe fostering ongoing discussions around this topic can empower people to feel less isolated in their experiences. Maybe setting up a forum or a dedicated online space for participants to share their thoughts could not only promote community support but also lead to further insights that could inform future research.

Best of luck with your study! I’m looking forward to seeing the impact of your findings.

    Warm regards,
    [Your Name]

  3. Hi Selina,

Thank you for sharing your initiative with us! It’s inspiring to see students like you taking the lead on such important research that addresses the pervasive concerns surrounding online platforms. The increasing rate of misinformation and intrusive ads not only affects user experience but also poses significant implications for democracy and informed decision-making.

I also believe it’s crucial to highlight the importance of regulation in the digital age. As you’re gathering experiences and opinions, it might be beneficial to delve deeper into how diverse cultural backgrounds influence perceptions of online regulations. Understanding these nuances can provide richer insights into your findings and potentially suggest tailored recommendations that account for varying perspectives.

Additionally, have you considered how sharing the results of this study with participants might encourage more engagement? Transparency in research can foster trust and empower individuals to continue advocating for change.

Best of luck with your study, and I hope you get a strong response from participants! I’ll certainly share this with my network to amplify your call for participation.

    Keep up the great work!
