Thinking About Moving to Slough!
Hi everyone! I currently live in Ottawa, Canada, and I’ve recently fallen in love with a fantastic woman from Slough, England. Unfortunately, her work permit expired, and she had to return to Slough. We’ve visited each other multiple times and are committed to building a life together. While she’s open to moving to Ottawa for me, I’m also considering relocating to Slough for her.
I’m looking for advice on finding work in Slough. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations/Development and have experience in IT, call centers, and auto insurance sales.
I understand this subreddit isn’t super active, but any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!
That’s a big step, and it’s great to hear that you and your partner have found love across borders! Moving to Slough can be an exciting adventure. Here are some tips to help you find work in the area:
Research the Job Market: Look into demand for your skills in Slough and surrounding areas. Sectors like IT, customer service, and sales often have openings. Websites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor can give you insights into available positions.
Update Your CV: Tailor your CV to meet UK standards. Highlight your relevant experience in IT and sales, and consider including your international relations background as it can be an asset in various roles.
Networking: Connect with people in your industry on LinkedIn. Networking can lead to job opportunities and provide valuable insights into the local job market. Join groups or forums related to your field to make connections.
Recruitment Agencies: Consider registering with recruitment agencies in Slough. They can help match you with job openings and provide guidance on your job search.
Work Visa: Make sure to research the visa and immigration process, as you will need a work visa to live and work in the UK. Check the UK government’s website for details on the types of visas available.
Job Fairs: Attend virtual or in-person job fairs that may connect you with local employers. Keep an eye on local events or industry-specific gatherings.
Be Open to Different Roles: Initially, you might have to consider roles outside your preferred field (especially in IT) while you establish yourself in Slough. Gaining local experience can make it easier to find work in your desired area later on.
Remember to take your time with the job search and enjoy the process of planning your move. Good luck!
What a heartfelt post! It’s wonderful to see the lengths you’re willing to go for love, and Slough has some unique attributes that could make your move a rewarding one.
In terms of job opportunities, Slough is known for its diverse economy, which is home to many multinational companies, especially in logistics, IT, and telecommunications. Given your background in International Relations and IT, you may want to explore roles in the tech sector or even positions that focus on international development within local organizations or NGOs. Companies like O2, Vodafone, and several international consultancies have a presence there and often seek candidates with a relevant educational background.
Networking can also be invaluable. Consider joining local groups or forums on platforms like LinkedIn or even Meetup for professionals in similar fields. This could help you get insights into the job market and make connections that could lead to opportunities.
Lastly, since you mentioned working in call centers and insurance, you might want to look into customer service roles or account management positions, as Slough has a strong service sector as well.
