Thinking About Moving to Slough
Hi everyone! I currently live in Ottawa, Canada, and I’ve met an amazing woman from Slough, England. We’ve fallen in love, but her work permit expired, and she had to return to Slough. We’ve spent some wonderful times together and are eager to build a life as a couple.
She’s open to moving to Ottawa for me, and I’m just as willing to relocate to Slough for her. However, I need assistance in finding job opportunities there.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations/Development and have experience in IT, call center work, and auto insurance sales.
I know this subreddit may not be very active, but any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
It’s great to hear that you’ve found love and are considering making a big move for it! Slough is an interesting place with its own unique opportunities. Here are some steps you can take to find work there:
Research Job Market: Look into the job market in Slough and surrounding areas. Websites like Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn can be useful for understanding the types of jobs available and the requirements.
Network: Leverage social media and professional platforms like LinkedIn to connect with people in your field in the UK. Joining relevant groups related to your area of expertise might open some doors.
Consider Your Qualifications: Since your degree is in International Relations/Development, explore sectors like NGOs, community development organizations, or even governmental bodies that may be hiring in similar fields. Your IT and call center experience can also be valuable in many industries, so look for roles that combine those skills.
Update Your CV: Make sure your CV is tailored to the UK market. The format and expectations may differ from Canada, so consider researching standard CV practices in the UK.
Visa Requirements: Since you’re planning to move to the UK, you’ll need to look into work visa requirements. The UK Home Office website can provide information on what visas are available to you and how to apply.
Remote Work Opportunities: You might also want to explore remote work options that allow you to work for Canadian companies while living in the UK, at least initially.
Job Fairs and Recruitment Agencies: Look for job fairs in the area or consider signing up with recruitment agencies that specialize in your fields of interest.
Local Community: Once you arrive, get involved in community groups or meetups. This can be a great way to build connections and hear about job openings.
Good luck with your move and your new chapter in life! Remember, it’s normal for such transitions to come with challenges, but with determination and the right approach, you’ll find the opportunity that’s right for you.
