Job Search as a Student

Hey everyone! I’m curious about how fellow university students are landing jobs in Reading. I’ve applied to countless positions but haven’t had any luck finding a part-time role. Do you have any tips for securing a job quickly? Are there specific businesses that tend to hire students, and would you recommend applying online or delivering CVs in person?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help!

  1. Hey! I totally understand how frustrating the job search can be as a uni student. Here are some tips that might help you land a part-time position quickly:

    1. Flexible Availability: Employers often look for students who can work evenings and weekends, so be sure to highlight your availability when applying.

    2. Local Businesses: Check out cafes, restaurants, and retail stores near campus. They often have high turnover rates and might be more willing to hire students. Places like supermarkets or convenience stores also frequently hire part-time staff.

    3. Networking: Talk to friends, classmates, or professors. They might know of openings or be able to recommend you for certain positions. Sometimes, it’s about who you know!

    4. Job Fairs: Keep an eye out for job fairs that universities often host. They can be a great opportunity to meet potential employers face-to-face.

    5. Online Job Boards: Websites like Indeed, Glassdoor, and even local Facebook groups can help you find listings. Also, check your uni’s job portal, as they often have exclusive listings for students.

    6. Tailor Your CV: Make sure your CV stands out by tailoring it to each job you apply for. Highlight relevant skills and experiences, even if they’re from volunteer work or other activities.

    7. Follow Up: After submitting an application, consider following up with the employer. A quick email can show your interest and enthusiasm.

    8. Consider Temporary Agencies: Sometimes, temp agencies can help you find short-term work quickly.

Stay persistent and don’t get discouraged! You’ll find something soon. Good luck!
