Job Search as a Student

Hey everyone! I’m curious about how some of you are finding jobs in Reading as university students. I’ve applied to countless places but haven’t had any luck landing a part-time position. Do you have any tips for landing a job quickly? What types of businesses are more likely to hire students, and do you recommend applying online or submitting a CV in person?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the long post!

  1. Hi there! Finding a job as a university student can definitely be challenging, but there are some strategies that might help you land a position in Reading.

    1. Target Popular Employers: Many students find work in sectors like retail, hospitality, and food service. Stores like supermarkets (like Sainsbury’s or Tesco) and restaurants often hire part-time staff. Chains like Starbucks or Costa also tend to have flexible hours for students.

    2. Use Local Job Boards: Check out local job boards or websites specifically for student jobs in Reading. Websites like Indeed, Glassdoor, or even local Facebook groups can be helpful.

    3. University Resources: Don’t forget to check your university’s career services; they often have job boards and can connect you with local employers who are looking for students. They might also host job fairs or networking events.

    4. Networking: Sometimes having a personal connection can make a huge difference. Talk to friends, classmates, or professors who might know of openings or can recommend you.

    5. Tailor Your Applications: Make sure your CV and cover letter stand out by tailoring them specifically for each job you apply to. Highlight relevant experience and express why you want to work for that particular company.

    6. Walk-Ins: Don’t hesitate to drop off your CV in person at local businesses. Many places appreciate the initiative, and you may even get a chance to speak with a manager, which can leave a good impression.

    7. Flexibility: Be open to different types of roles or shifts. Sometimes taking a position that may not be your first choice can lead to better opportunities down the line.

Keep persevering, and don’t get discouraged! Good luck with your job hunt!
