Late Night London to Reading Trains

Just moved to the area and went out for drinks in central London tonight. Assumed trains ran regularly but luckily caught something was up tonight.

Long story short ended up having to get the central line to Ealing Broadway, then from earning broadway to Reading – a circa 2 hour trip from central London.

Is this really the way or have I missed a trick? Left around 00:45 and got home at 2:45. Hoping someone can set expectations of how you can both be out later in London but still get back in sensible time..? Ie what should options look like if you find yourself out at 1, 2, or even 3 in London?

Thanks
