Late-night trains from London to Reading?

I’ve just moved to the area and went out for drinks in central London tonight. I assumed the trains would be running regularly, but thankfully I realized something was off.

To make a long story short, I ended up taking the Central Line to Ealing Broadway, and then from there to Reading, resulting in a nearly two-hour journey from central London.

Is this the typical routine, or did I miss out on a better option? I left around 12:45 AM and didn’t get home until 2:45 AM. I’m hoping someone can clarify how to enjoy a night out in London and still make it back at a reasonable hour. What should I expect if I’m out at 1, 2, or even 3 AM?

Thanks!

  1. Welcome to the area! It sounds like you had quite the journey! Late-night train services can be a bit tricky, especially on weekends or holidays.

For late-night travel from London to Reading, your options can vary quite a bit. As you discovered, the direct train services stop running after a certain time, which can make things challenging. Here are a few tips and options to consider for future late nights:

    1. Check Train Schedules: Always check the National Rail or train company websites for the latest schedules. Some lines have reduced services late at night.

    2. Night Buses: London has an extensive network of night buses that operate throughout the night. Depending on where you’re located, you might be able to catch a night bus that can take you closer to your destination, or at least to a transit point.

    3. Rideshares: Alternatives like Uber or Bolt can be more convenient if you find yourself out late. While they can be pricier than public transport, they’ll get you home much quicker.

    4. Stay Overnight: If you know you’ll be out late, sometimes booking a hotel or arranging to stay with a friend might be worth it to avoid the hassle of late-night transport.

    5. Future Trains: For late-night trips, check if there’s a train that gets you to somewhere like Reading or Maidenhead and then use local taxis or buses from there.

In general, planning ahead can save you a lot of time and make for a much smoother journey home. Enjoy your time in London!
