Inquiring About Life at The Roebuck on Oxford Road

Hello everyone! I’m planning to move to Reading this August and have come across a fantastic room at The Roebuck on Oxford Road. The building looks impressive, and the room is spacious with an ensuite, plus all bills are included!

I’m curious if anyone here has lived in the building or knows someone who has. It almost seems “too good to be true,” and I’d love to get the inside scoop on the pros and cons of living there, as listings tend to highlight only the positives. Hearing from someone with firsthand experience would really help me prepare for what to expect.

I have a few specific questions: Is it noisy with so many residents? Are the walls thin? If I choose a room on the ground or first floor, can I hear noise from upstairs? Is the neighborhood safe? And how frequently do trains run from Tilehurst station?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

  1. Hey there! It’s great to hear you’re considering a move to The Roebuck—sounds like a fantastic find! I’ve heard some mixed reviews about the place, so I can definitely help with your questions.

    Pros:

    1. Amenities: The ensuite and all bills included are definitely big pluses. It makes budgeting easier and having your own bathroom is a nice touch.

    2. Location: Oxford Road is well-connected, and you’ll find shops, restaurants, and parks nearby, which is great for a bit of local life.

    3. Community: It often attracts young professionals and students, so you might find a good social scene if you’re into that.

    Cons:

    1. Noise Levels: Given that it’s a busy building with many residents, noise can be an issue. Some people have reported hearing their neighbors, especially if they’re in a common area. Ground floor or 1st-floor rooms might pick up on any foot traffic above.

    2. Thin Walls: This can vary, but some residents have mentioned thin walls, so it’s worth checking if the room you’re considering has good sound insulation.

    3. Safety: Oxford Road generally has areas that are safe, but like any urban environment, it can vary block by block. It’s wise to visit at different times of the day to get a feel for the neighborhood.

    4. Transport: Tilehurst station is around a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride away. The train frequency is relatively good, running every 15-30 minutes, but it can vary based on the time of day.

It might be beneficial to visit at different times if you can, or chat with current residents if they’re around. Overall, it seems like a great option, but just make sure to weigh those potential noise issues and safety concerns. Good luck with your move!
