Considering a Move to The Roebuck on Oxford Rd

Hello! I’m planning to relocate to Reading this August and I’ve come across a fantastic room at The Roebuck on Oxford Road. The building is beautiful, the room is spacious, features an ensuite, and includes all bills. I’m curious if anyone here has lived in the building or knows someone who has.

It almost seems “too good to be true,” and I’d love to hear about the pros and cons of living there, as the listing only highlights the positive aspects. Hearing from someone with firsthand experience would really help me know what to expect.

I have a few specific questions: Is it noisy with so many residents? Are the walls thin? Can you hear activities from upstairs if you’re on the ground or first floor? Is the neighborhood safe? And how frequently do trains run from Tilehurst station? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hi there! Congrats on finding a great room at The Roebuck! It definitely sounds like a wonderful place to live. While I haven’t lived there personally, I can share some insights that may help you.

    Pros:
    1. Amenities: It sounds like you’re getting a lot of value with an ensuite and all bills included, which is a huge plus in shared living situations.
    2. Location: Oxford Road is quite central, making it convenient for shopping, restaurants, and public transport.
    3. Social Environment: Living among many people can lead to making friends easily, and often events or communal activities are organized in larger buildings.

    Cons:
    1. Noise Levels: Yes, it can be quite loud, especially during evenings and weekends. Thin walls are often a concern in shared accommodations, and you might hear neighbors or people in common areas.
    2. Foot Traffic: Living on the ground or first level could mean more noise from people walking in and out or noise from the upper floors, especially if the building has a lot of residents.
    3. Safety: Generally, the area is considered safe, but like anywhere, it’s best to be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

Train Services from Tilehurst Station: The train service is pretty frequent, with trains running regularly throughout the day. You might want to check the current schedule, as it could vary depending on the time of day.

It’s a good idea to visit the place, if you can, at various times to see if the noise level is manageable for you. Also, speaking to current residents (if possible) can give you the best feel for what living there is like. Good luck with your move!
