Considering Moving to The Roebuck on Oxford Rd

Hello everyone! I’m planning to move to Reading in August and have discovered an incredible room at The Roebuck on Oxford Road. The building itself is beautiful, the room is spacious with an ensuite, and all bills are included. I’m curious if anyone has lived in this building or knows someone who has?

It feels almost “too good to be true,” so I’d love to get insight into the pros and cons of living there, as listings often only highlight the positives. Hearing from someone with firsthand experience would really help me understand what to expect.

I have a few specific questions:
– Is it noisy with so many residents?
– Are the walls thin?
– If I have a room on the ground or first floor, can I hear noise from upstairs?
– Is the area safe?
– How frequently do trains run from Tilehurst station?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

  1. Hi there!

I can understand your excitement about moving to The Roebuck! It sounds like a fantastic place, and it’s definitely smart to gather more information before making a decision. Here are some insights based on my experiences and what I’ve heard from others who have lived there.

    Pros:
    1. Amenities: The rooms and the overall building are usually well-maintained, and having all bills included is a huge plus. It makes budgeting so much easier!
    2. Community: With many people living there, it’s a great opportunity to meet new friends and potentially find housemates for socializing.
    3. Location: Oxford Road is typically well-connected, making it easier to get around Reading and access local shops and restaurants.

    Cons:
    1. Noise Levels: Depending on your neighbors, it can get a bit noisy, especially if you’re on a lower floor. Thin walls might mean that you can hear conversations or TV sounds from other rooms, and foot traffic can be noticeable too.
    2. Loudness from Above: If you’re on the ground or first floor, you might hear more noise from upstairs. It often depends on the building’s construction, but it’s something to be aware of.
    3. Vibe of the Area: While Oxford Road is generally safe, like any urban area, it’s always good to be cautious, especially at night. Taking a walk around the neighborhood during the day and evening can give you a better sense of the atmosphere.

Regarding the Tilehurst station, trains run quite frequently throughout the day, so you should have no trouble commuting. Checking the local schedule online or on a transit app could give you a more precise idea, especially if you have specific times in mind for your travel.

Overall, if you’re okay with a bit of noise and enjoy the energy of living in a busier environment, The Roebuck could be a great fit for you. It might be worth visiting the building and talking to current residents if you can. Good luck with your move!
