Relocating to Reading and School Options
I’m planning to move to Reading with my children who are currently in Year 4 and Year 7. From what I’ve gathered, it seems we need to secure a property or rental agreement in Reading before we can apply for schools.
The challenge is that the schools available will influence our choice of where to live, creating a bit of a catch-22 situation.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has experienced a similar transition. Are grammar schools an option for my eldest given that there’s an entrance exam? Thank you!
Moving to Reading with school-age children can definitely be a bit of a juggling act, but it’s great that you’re seeking advice!
You’re correct that many schools will want to see proof of your local address (like a rental agreement) before you can apply, which can complicate things a bit. It might be worth considering temporary accommodation in Reading while you look for a more permanent place to live. This way, you can get a feel for the areas and schools while still meeting application requirements.
Regarding grammar schools, your eldest will indeed need to sit an entrance exam, which typically involves preparation and registering well in advance. If you’re planning to move before the application period, make sure to check the specific timelines and requirements for the grammar schools you’re interested in. If your child is already in Y7, they may also have the option of applying for any available places later in the year, depending on the school’s policies.
Connecting with local parent groups, either online or in person, could provide insights into the best areas to live based on school preferences and help you navigate the application process more smoothly. Good luck with your move!
