Considering a Move to Slough

Hi everyone,

My wife recently accepted a job in Slough, and given her current two-hour commute each way, we’re thinking about relocating there to make things easier. I currently work in London Bridge, so it would be a welcome change for me as well.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Slough, but when I walked around the town center on a weekday, it seemed perfectly fine, albeit a bit quiet. There are some familiar big-name brands, and with the ongoing regeneration and the upcoming Crossrail, I’m hopeful that things will improve further.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the area. Are there any specific neighborhoods we should consider or avoid, especially in terms of crime and general atmosphere? What’s it really like to live near the center? I’m finding that most blog posts are outdated, often cautioning against moving there—has the situation changed?

Having lived in Walthamstow and North London for most of my life, I’m not familiar with Slough, so any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  1. Hi there,

It sounds like you’re making a big decision with your upcoming move! Slough can be a bit polarizing, but like any place, it really depends on your priorities and preferences.

You’re right that the commute is a significant factor, especially compared to what you’re dealing with now. With Crossrail set to improve connections, Slough is becoming more attractive for commuters heading into London.

In terms of the town itself, the ongoing regeneration projects aim to make the area more vibrant and welcoming. Central Slough has seen improvements, especially around the shops and public spaces. It’s true that it might feel a bit quiet at times, but that can also mean less hustle and bustle if you prefer a calmer environment.

Regarding crime, like any town, there are areas that are better than others. Generally, the neighborhoods close to the town center are relatively safe, but it’s worth doing some specific research on the different areas. Locals can provide insights into which neighborhoods are more community-oriented and family-friendly.

As for living near the center, you’ll have easy access to amenities, transport, and the convenience of being close to work, but it might lack some of the character you’d find in more established London suburbs. Try to get a feel for the community by visiting at different times of day or checking out local groups on social media.

Overall, many people have found that Slough has improved in recent years and is a decent place to settle with good transport links. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you and your wife are proactive about integrating into the community, you could find it to be a suitable place for you both. Good luck with the move!
