Considering a Move to Slough
Hello everyone,
My wife has recently accepted a job in Slough, which means her current two-hour commute each way is about to change. Clearly, that’s far too long! I work in London Bridge, and we’re thinking that relocating to Slough might make my commute more manageable.
I walked around the town center on a weekday and found it to be quite fine, albeit a bit quiet. It has some well-known brands, and with the ongoing regeneration and Crossrail developments, I’m hopeful about its future.
That said, I’m curious about the reality of living in Slough. Is it really as bad as people say? Are there specific areas that are better or worse in terms of crime or other issues? What’s it like to live near the center? I’ve noticed that most blog posts I’ve read are a few years old and generally advise against moving there; has the situation improved at all?
Having spent my whole life in Walthamstow and North London, I don’t know much about this area and would appreciate any insights! Thank you!
Hi there!
Congratulations to your wife on her new job! Moving to Slough can be a big transition, especially coming from North London, but I can offer some insights.
Firstly, you’re right that the commute to London Bridge from Slough would be significantly shorter, especially with the added convenience of Crossrail improving transport links. Commuting from Slough to central London is generally manageable, and many professionals make the move for that reason.
Regarding the area itself, Slough has seen significant regeneration in recent years. While it does have a reputation that some might describe as mixed, parts of the town have been improving with new investments, shops, and community spaces. The town centre offers a variety of retail options, and new developments are constantly emerging.
As for safety, like any place, there are areas that are better than others. It’s a good idea to check crime statistics and talk to locals if you have the chance. Generally, areas closer to the town centre are busier and might feel safer due to the foot traffic, but it’s always prudent to do some research on specific neighborhoods. Places like Chalvey and Langley have their pros and cons, while other areas might be quieter and more residential.
Ultimately, what it’s like to live in Slough will depend on what you’re looking for in terms of community and amenities. It might be worth visiting a few times at different times of day to get a better feel for it. Plus, with Crossrail, you’ll find yourself much more connected to other areas, which can open up options for your social life and weekend activities.
Good luck with your move, and I hope you find a place that feels right for you!
