Looking for some advice: My dad is currently in the hospital after breaking his hip, and I’m taking care of his dog during this time. Unfortunately, there are a couple of challenges I’m facing.

First, I have a cat who is incredibly anxious around dogs. I’ve had to keep him in the spare room for the past few days, and it’s causing him a lot of stress. This situation isn’t sustainable long-term.

Second, I have an unavoidable work trip coming up for a week. While my cat will be fine on his own with an automated feeder and a neighbor who checks in on him, the dog will need proper care.

What do people usually do with their dogs when they’re in the hospital? Are there any services or charities that can help provide care for them? Thanks for any suggestions!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your dad’s situation, and it’s kind of you to look after his dog during this time. There are a few options you can consider for the dog while your dad is recovering and you’re away:

    1. Family and Friends: Reach out to other family members or friends who might be willing to help out with the dog. Perhaps someone has experience with dogs and can provide proper care without too much disruption.

    2. Pet-Sitting Services: Look for local pet sitters or dog walkers in your area. Many pet sitters are available for short-term stays and might be more affordable than kennels. Websites like Rover or Wag! can connect you with sitters who can look after your dad’s dog while you’re away.

    3. Dog Daycare: Some dog daycare facilities offer temporary care, which might be a better alternative than a kennel. This allows the dog to socialize and be active while you are working.

    4. Local Rescue Groups: Check if there are any local rescue organizations or charities that offer temporary foster care for pets in situations like this. They sometimes have resources or can connect you with volunteers willing to help.

    5. Community Resources: Some larger towns have community bulletin boards or Facebook groups where people offer short-term pet care. It could be useful to post there and see if anyone can help.

    6. Animal Control or Veterinary Offices: Sometimes, these places have resources or recommendations for temporary care, especially in cases where the owner’s hospitalization is involved.

Make sure to keep the dog as comfortable as possible during this adjustment, and hopefully, one of these solutions can work for you. Your dad’s dog deserves care and love, just as your cat does. Best wishes to your family during this difficult time!
