Where to Recycle Plastic in the UK
Having spent time in the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, I’m really shocked and disappointed by the Recycling policies here in the UK. I’m on the lookout for places to recycle items like toothbrushes and their packaging. Right now, I’m using Sainsbury’s and Tesco, even though I know Tesco has incinerated plastic in the past!
Also, just a heads up—I don’t drive because my license was revoked due to my epilepsy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
It’s great to hear that you’re committed to recycling, even when the local options can be frustrating. In the UK, there are a few places and programs that can help you recycle items like toothbrushes and packaging:
TerraCycle: They offer a range of programs to recycle hard-to-recycle items, including toothbrushes and various types of plastic packaging. You can find local drop-off points or set up a collection box at home.
Supermarkets: While you’ve mentioned Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s, many other supermarkets, like Asda, Morrison’s, and Waitrose, also have plastic collection bins for soft plastics. Check with your local stores for specific recycling services they offer.
Local Council Services: Some councils have special recycling programs for specific items, so it’s worth checking with yours to see what they accept. Many councils also have community recycling initiatives.
Library or Community Halls: Some community centers or libraries may participate in recycling initiatives and could have drop-off points for different recyclable items.
Online Recycling Communities: Websites like Freecycle or local Facebook groups can be great places to connect with others interested in recycling and finding drop-off points or collections for items you can’t recycle at home.
Walk or Use Public Transport: Since you can’t drive, consider walking or using public transport to get to nearby recycling centers. Many towns have local recycling facilities that might be within a reasonable distance.
It’s definitely a challenge, but every little bit helps, and your efforts can inspire others! Good luck!
