Reading – Train Fare Hike on London Commute

The price for an “Anytime day travelcard” for journeys between Reading (or Reading West) and London stations in zones 1-6 has increased yet again. The current base fare (without a Railcard) has now reached an alarming £71.30. This raises two important questions:

  1. When will we reach a breaking point where people take action, like protesting or damaging trains?

  2. How do commuters manage to afford traveling from Reading to London without employer reimbursement?

  1. It’s frustrating to see such steep price increases for train fares, especially when commuting can already take a big chunk out of the budget.

    1. While rioting isn’t the answer, it’s clear that people need to voice their concerns more effectively. Protests, petitions, or lobbying local representatives could help bring attention to the issue and push for changes.

    2. Many commuters find different ways to manage the costs, whether it’s carpooling, exploring flexible work hours to avoid peak fares, or even considering remote work options when possible. Others may be using savings, budgeting more strictly, or searching for alternatives like bus services that may be cheaper. It’s a tough balance, and having support from employers or local governments would really make a difference!
